Plasticvrij tandenpoetsen: hoe ik me er goed op voorbereidde

Zodra ik had beslist dat ik me wilde focussen op plasticvrij tandenpoetsen kwam ik natuurlijk weer eerst in de Lush terecht. Deze winkel stond in het begin van mijn zoektocht naar een duurzamer leven vaak bovenaan mijn lijstje. Ook voor tandpasta ging ik hier dus eens kijken.

Tandpasta tabletten

Ze hebben een groot aanbod aan tandpasta tabletten voor iedereen die hun tanden plasticvrij wilt poetsen. Deze kleine tabletjes zitten verpakt in een plastic doosje. Deze kan je zoals alle plastic potjes hier opnieuw kan binnenbrengen na gebruik.

De plastic potjes bleven mij desondanks toch tegensteken. Daarnaast moet ik zeggen dat ik zelfs na een jaar nog steeds geen fan was van de tabletjes, ondanks de vele verschillende smaken die ik probeerde. Je kan dus niet zeggen dat ik het geen kans heb gegeven!

Vaste tandpasta

Vaste tandpasta op een houten stokje van Lamazuna is de volgende optie die ik uittestte. Deze op een lolly lijkende tandpasta zet je gewoon naast je tandenborstel. Wanneer je je tanden wilt poetsen maak je je tandenborstel nat, wrijf je over de tandpasta en poets je je tanden. Zo simpel is het! Ik had er nooit een echt proper gevoel bij dus testte het niet lang genoeg om met jullie mijn ervaringen op lange termijn te delen.

Vloeibare tandpasta

Ik ging op zoek naar een alternatief dat beter bij mij past. Zo kwam ik uit bij Ohne, een verpakkingsvrije winkel die twee vestigingen kreeg in mijn stad, Gent. Hier verkochten ze vloeibare tandpasta in een glazen pot! Het handige aan deze potten is dat er vanboven een pompje op zit waar je gewoon één keer op moet duwen en er komt een perfecte hoeveelheid tandpasta uit. Het grootste nadeel is dat dit pompje gemaakt is van plastic. In Ohne mag je je lege verpakking binnen brengen, maar dit was opnieuw niet volledig plasticvrij tandenpoetsen. Dus, ook al was ik enorme fan was van deze tandpastastructuur én smaak, zette ik mijn zoektocht verder.

Ik kwam terecht bij Ben&Anna, de tandpasta die ik tot de dag van vandaag nog steeds gebruik. Deze vloeibare tandpasta zit in een glazen pot met een metalen deksel. Deze materialen zijn 100% recycleerbaar wanneer juist weggegooid. Er zit een klein bamboe stokje bij het potje om de tandpasta mee op te scheppen en op je tandenborstel te smeren. Je moet er alleen voor zorgen dat je je stokje na elk gebruik afwast wil je het een beetje hygiënisch houden. Zeker wanneer je het met ander mensen deelt!

Tot nu toe heb ik nog geen tandpasta gevonden waar ik meer tevreden van ben dan van Ben&Anna. Ik sta altijd open om nieuwe soorten te proberen die ik nog niet ken!

Tandenborstel

Naast tandpasta heb je natuurlijk ook een tandenborstel nodig! ‘Gelukkig zijn hier minder keuzes in’ dacht ik toen ik begon te zoeken. Niet dus. Zo goed als alle plasticvrije tandenborstels zijn van bamboe gemaakt, de echte keuze zit em in de haartjes zelf! De meest voorkomende haartjes zijn gemaakt van nylon, jute, sisal of varkenshaar. Nylon is bij deze opties de enige die eigenlijk niet volledig biologisch afbreekbaar is. Sisal en jute zijn composteerbaar, maar de haartjes zijn te zacht om een goede mechanische reiniging van je tanden te hebben. 

De perfecte combinatie tussen mechanische reiniging en biologisch afbreekbaar is varkenshaar. Moest dit niet van een dier afkomstig zijn zou ik niet twijfelen. Gezien ik me niet goed voel bij het kopen van deze dierlijke haren en ik toch wel graag propere tanden wil viel mijn keuze bij nylonhaartjes. Deze nylonhaartjes zijn nog niet optimaal wanneer je alles echt ecologisch wilt. Nylon 4 zou onder perfecte omstandigheden volledig afbreken. Spijtig genoeg wordt er voornamelijk ‘stiekem’ het niet afbreekbare nylon 6 gebruikt, maar dat is een ander gesprek. Best breek je het voorste deel van je tandenborstel af bij het recycleren. De bamboe kan op de composthoop maar de nylon moet in de gewone vuilbak.

Mijn badkamer is na deze zoektocht opnieuw wat ecologischer en als ik eerlijk mag zijn is het gewoon ook veel mooier dan al die plastic!
