maar hoe duurzaam is bamboe nu eigenlijk
Bamboe heeft de eigenschappen van hardhout (welke de traaggroeiende bomen zijn), maar groeit sneller dan zachthout (welke de snelgroeiende bomen zijn). Net zoals bij andere planten reduceert bamboe het broeikaseffect door CO2 te reduceren. Het is zelfs zo dat bamboe méér zuurstof uit de lucht absorbeert dan gelijkwaardig hardhout. Bamboe reduceert zelfs tot 5 keer meer CO2 en produceert 35% meer zuurstof. Dit zorgt er voor dat het een erg belangrijke plant is om de opwarming van de aarde tegen te gaan.
Het kappen van de oudere bamboestammen geeft de jongere bamboe meer ruimte om te groeien. Dit maakt bamboe een onuitputtelijke bron.
Bamboe is niet alleen een duurzaam alternatief, het is ook een stevig alternatief! Er wordt zelf beweerd dat bamboe in verhouding zeven keer sterker is dan staal. Het zou een grotere treksterkte hebben en daardoor een van de sterkste materialen op aarde! Naast sterk is bamboe ook elastisch. Het is buigzaam, maar vervormt niet na doorbuigen. Het wordt ook gebruikt als natuurlijke schokdemper.
Bamboe heeft naast zijn bouweigenschappen nog veel goede kwaliteiten. Het is een natuurlijk antibacterieel materiaal en het is geurverdrijver. Bamboe bevat geen giftige stoffen en veroorzaakt daardoor geen allergiën.
