Hoe afwassen in een plasticvrije keuken

In de keuken wilde ik zoals alle andere kamers in mijn huis plastic proberen weren. Naast verpakkingen van eten is er bij de meeste mensen in de keuken nog enorm veel plastic te vinden. Ik wilde kijken hoe ik kon afwassen in een plasticvrije keuken. Eerst ging ik op zoek naar een alternatieve spons. De typische wegwerpspons die overal terug te vinden is zit steeds in plastic verpakt. Om te kunnen afwassen zonder plastic zocht ik eerst naar een vervanging hiervoor. Zo kwam ik uit op een hennepspons verpakt in gerecycleerd karton. Deze spons is gemaakt van cellulose op houtbasis welke in een hennep zakje zit. Het handige aan dit sponsje is dat hij in de vaatwasser mag wanneer je denkt dat hij zelf ook eens een wasbeurt nodig heeft. Niet iedereen heeft een vaatwasser, maar ik heb ontdekt dat de spons ook geen problemen heeft met een wasmachine! 

Nog een leuk voordeel aan deze spons is dat het zo ontworpen is dat je over het algemeen minder zeep nodig hebt. Win-win!

Nadeel van de spons: je kan er absoluut niet mee schuren. Voor veel vaat is dat niet van toepassing, maar af en toe wil ik gewoon makkelijk mijn vuil ergens kunnen uitschuren. Om hier een vervanging op te zoeken moest ik niet lang zoeken. De afwasborstel bestaat al jàren! Nu kan je die gelukkig overal vinden gemaakt uit een handvat van duurzaam hout en een borstel van natuurlijke vezels en hij werkt perfect.

Afwassen zonder plastic gaat niet wanneer je gebruik blijft maken van de gewone afwasproducten die standaard in een plastic fles zitten. In een verpakkingsvrije winkel in mijn stad, Gent, verkopen ze blokken afwasmiddel. 100% plasticvrij. Je wrijft deze zeep op je afwasspons, dit maakt schuim en je bent klaar om aan je afwas te beginnen!

zowel de spons, de schuurborstel als het afwasmiddel hebben mij volledig overtuigd. Ik heb een afwasmachine (met duurzame afwasblokjes, maar dat is een volgend verhaal) en moet gelukkig niet zo heel vaak afwassen, maar wanneer ik dit dan toch moet doen wil ik dat het makkelijk is. Belangrijk voordeel: het is na enkele maanden niet duurder dan wegwerp sponsjes en goedkoop afwasmiddel uit een plastic fles. Zeker het overwegen waard dus!
