Mijn kamerplanten houden mij bezig op dagen dat ik me wil ontspannen maar toch het huis niet echt wil uitkomen. Deze dagen komen best veel voor, dus ik ben dankbaar voor mijn niet zo lang geleden ontdekte passie. Kamerplanten houden is een hele kunst op zich, maar hoe zorg je nu voor ecologisch verantwoorde kamerplanten.
Kamerplanten houden op zich lijkt niet zo slecht voor het milieu, maar dit is jammer genoeg wel zo. Wanneer je bij een gewone kweker gaat zijn er enorm veel chemische stoffen gebruikt om de plant groot te krijgen. De plant zit in plastic potten, potgrond zit in plastic, voedingsstoffen zijn chemisch en de ongediertebestrijders al helemaal. Tegenwoordig zijn er gelukkig voor al deze ‘problemen’ ecologische alternatieven.
Het probleem van potgrond
Potgrond heeft naast de verpakking nog een ander probleem. Het hoofdbestanddeel is zo goed als altijd turf. Deze pre-fosiele brandstof wordt ontgint in natuurgebieden. Turf bevat duizenden jaren oude plantenresten en veel koolstof. Omdat het zo traag aangemaakt wordt, wordt het gezien als een niet hernieuwbare brandstof.
Turf is niet voedzaam voor de plant. Het zorgt voornamelijk voor de luchtigheid en de structuur van de potgronden die wij kennen. Het vasthouden van vocht kan deels opgelost worden door veenmos toe te voegen. Naar het ecologisch kweken van veenmos zijn volop testen aan de gang. Een groot nadeel van turf vervangen is dat er niet 1 bestanddeel nodig zal zijn, maar verschillende gemengd. De potgrond zal er hierdoor misschien wat grover uitzien, maar daar maken onze kamerplanten niets van.
Bio potgrond kopen geeft jammer genoeg niet de zekerheid dat er geen turf aanwezig is in de potgrond. Gezien turf uit de grond komt en dus natuurlijk is mag dit het label bio dragen. Bio betekent dus niet per sé ecologisch verantwoorde kamerplanten!
Stap naar ecologisch verantwoorde kamerplanten: zelf je potgrond maken
Wil je het écht goed doen en zeker zijn van wat er in je grond zit? Maak deze dan zelf! Een basisrecept hiervoor is makkelijk samen te stellen. Je hebt tuingrond nodig (best zand of leem), compost en grof zand of rijnzand. Voeg 4 delen tuingrond, 4 delen compost en 2 delen van dit grof zand of rijnzand bij elkaar en je hebt perfect bruikbare potgrond. Dit is niet zo vanzelfsprekend wanneer je, zoals ik, in een appartementje woont. Heb je een tuin, probeer dit dan zeker eens!
Kokosvezel wordt veel gebruikt om potgrond luchtiger te maken. Wil je nog ecologischer zijn? Neem dan bladcompost van eik, beuk of berk. Deze bladeren verzamel je makkelijkst in de winter en laat je 2 jaar composteren.
plasticvrije potgrond
Potgrond, zowel met als zonder turf en andere niet duurzame materialen zit verpakt in plastic zakken. Hier is tot vandaag nog steeds geen duurzaam alternatief beschikbaar voor. Je kan altijd je plastic zakken gebruiken voor andere doeleinden nadat de potgrond op is, maar dit is niet het antwoord dat ik jullie zou willen geven. Wanneer je zelf potgrond maakt kan je deze bewaren in oude zakken of gebruik ze om compost in te maken.
Er bestaan tegenwoordig al enkele plaatsen waar je ter plaatse je potten kan verpotten en dus geen plastic verpakkingen moet kopen. Deze potgrond is dan in bulk aangekocht wat de plastic al veel kan terugschroeven. Vaak kan je hier ook potgrond kopen en meenemen in een door jezelf gekozen verpakking.
